McGeorge hosts international scholars, professors, judges and practitioners conducting law-related research through our Visiting Scholars Program.

While at McGeorge, visiting scholars receive support from the Graduate and International Programs Office. Visiting scholars also enjoy access to our library, including Lexis and Westlaw research databases and a study carrel.

Visiting Scholars
Apply to the program

We invite applicants to participate in McGeorge’s Visiting Scholar Program for either a full academic year or one semester term.

Visiting scholars may start the program in either the Fall (August) or Spring (January) semesters. Summer start (May, June and July) is not available.

While we do review visiting scholar applications on a rolling basis, scholar appointments follow the law school’s academic cycle: Fall Semester (August to December) and Spring (January to May)

Attendance at Fall or Spring orientation is mandatory for visiting scholars.

English language proficiency is required: minimum of TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.0. If English language test scores are not available, English language proficiency may be demonstrated by other means, including a video interview.

Most visiting scholars (non-U.S. citizen/legal permanent resident) will need to obtain a J-1 visa to attend the program at McGeorge School of law. J-1 and J-2 (J-2 visas can be granted to legally married spouses and children) visas are obtained by the issuance of a Form DS2019. Designated School Officials in the Graduate & International Programs Office at McGeorge work with scholars to prepare the necessary forms for the scholar and dependents at no additional university cost*.

*J visa applicants are required to pay to the US Government the I-901 SEVIS Fee and visa application (DS-160) fee.  If your visa is approved, you may also need to pay a visa issuance fee, if applicable to your nationality.

In addition to the fee of $4,500 per semester, scholars must provide their own funding to cover all expenses related to their stay, including medical insurance for self and any accompanying dependents.

Health insurance coverage for J-1 scholars and accompanying J-2 dependents is required throughout the period of stay. All scholars must enroll in a plan that meets the U.S. Department of State requirements.

Minimum coverage must meet or exceed the following:

Medical Benefits$100,000
Repatriation of remains$25,000
Medical Evacuation$50,000
Deductible per accident or illness $500

In addition to UCSIS requirements scholars and dependents may be subject to the individual mandate and shared responsibility of payment as mandated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

Participating in University Life

To encourage involvement and interaction with the campus community, visiting scholars are expected to participate in the life of the law school by attending student and faculty events, presenting their research at a Visiting Scholars’ Roundtable and auditing a minimum of one course each semester. Upon arrival, visiting scholars must attend Visiting Scholar Orientation, and upon completion of the program, visiting scholars must submit a copy or summary of their research project.

Visiting Scholar Class Audit Requirement

For the duration of enrollment in the program stay, scholars are required to audit one course, and may audit up to three courses. We will meet with scholars to determine which course is the most appropriate to audit. Scholars are provided with access to our library, including access to the Lexis and Westlaw legal research databases.

Visiting Scholar Roundtable Discussion

All admitted scholars have an opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion where they will present a short presentation based on their research project. This roundtable takes place once each semester. Scholars are asked to provide a draft of their PowerPoint presentation a week prior to the event. Date of the event to be announced at the beginning of each semester.
