12 to remember: a look back at successful fall sports season

Bogdan Djerkovic

A remarkable turnaround in women’s soccer, led by co-head coaches. A strong second half of the volleyball season, including two wins over ranked teams. Competitive water polo matches against all of the nation’s Top 10 teams.

The results are an incredible fall for Pacific Athletics. Here are highlights:

  1. Women’s soccer: Denesha Adams and J.J. Wozniak earned West Coast Conference coaching honors, the first time a Pacific head coach has received that honor since 2016. The duo became interim co-head coaches when the previous coach resigned in July. Following the season, they were named co-head coaches and received the WCC honor.
  2. Volleyball: By finishing fourth in the competitive West Coast Conference, the Tigers received an automatic berth in the National Invitational Volleyball Tournament. They won six of nine matches in the second round of conference play to finish with a 10-8 league record.
  3. Men’s soccer: Pacific was 4-1-2, good for second place in the West Coast Conference. Champion Santa Clara and third-place Portland advanced to NCAA Tournament play, and the Tigers tied both teams. The only loss in conference play for Pacific was a 1-0 setback at Saint Mary’s.

  1. Men’s water polo: Pacific finished ranked sixth in the nation after playing one of the most challenging schedules in the country. The Tigers faced all nine of the other Top 10 teams.
  2. Women’s cross country: The Tigers hosted the Pacific Collegiate Invitational, its first home meet in many years. Graduate student Emma Winkler was the first Tiger to cross the line, finishing fifth.
  3. Fantastic freshmen: Tigers on the men’s water polo and men’s soccer teams were named conference freshmen of the year. Reuel D’Souza earned Golden Coast Conference men’s water polo freshman of the year honors. He scored 25 goals. Erik Centeno earned WCC men’s soccer freshman of the year honors. Five of his six goals came in WCC play, including the equalizer in the 2-2 tie with eventual champion Santa Clara.

  1. Last line of defense: Women’s soccer’s Brenna Crump earned the WCC goalkeeper of the year and first-team all-WCC honors after leading the conference in saves with 85. The junior was tied for second in the WCC in shutouts with eight.
  2. Give me libero: What is a libero?  It is a defensive specialist in volleyball—and Pacific had the best one in the WCC. Jadyn Tubbs earned WCC libero of the year and first-team All-WCC honors after leading the conference in digs at 4.39 per set.
  3. Fan support: Soccer matches attracted excellent crowds to Knoles Field on the Stockton Campus, including 912 fans for the matchup with defending women’s national champion Santa Clara. For the men, the 655 fans for the September contest against Stanford was a season best.

  1. Fan support, part 2: The volleyball program re-established the Spanos Center as one of the toughest venues in the WCC by winning six of nine home WCC matches, including victories over eventual NCAA Tournament teams San Diego and Pepperdine.

  3. All-conference honors: Eight Pacific student-athletes were selected by conference coaches to first-team all-conference honors this fall:
