Celebrating untold stories during Women’s History Month
Pacific will host robust programming during Women's History Month.
As California's first coeducational university, Pacific has a long history of celebrating the achievements and contributions of women.
That celebration will be amplified during Women’s History Month in March with events that capture untold stories of women challenging the status quo and creating a more equitable future.
For Cosana Eram, director of Gender Studies, it’s an opportunity to create “more awareness about each other and the different types of femininity and women's voices that are around us.”
Added Mario Enriquez, director of Intercultural Student Success: “We want to be able to educate the community and also build spaces for people to ask questions. There's a lot of things people may not know about when it comes to women's history.”
The annual Gender Studies Spring Colloquium on March 8 will focus on stories of hope and resilience among women of color and coincides with International Women’s Day.
Mary Wardell-Ghirarduzzi, vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion and chief diversity officer, will present, “Her dream deferred no more: Reimagining joy, love, and resilience for black women and girls,” a nod to the Langston Hughes poem “A Dream Deferred.”
“I want to put a different framing on what we often hear,” said Wardell-Ghirarduzzi. “We don't hear enough about black joy and black resilience, and even more so, black excellence, and there's a lot of it to be had.”
Winona LaDuke, a former Green Party vice presidential candidate, will be the keynote speaker at an event March 10. A co-founder of Honor the Earth, she’s spent years raising money and awareness for Native environmental issues.
Events will honor LatinX women, Black women poets and women of color in STEM, “different facets that I think most people wouldn't normally think of,” said Enriquez. “What better place than Pacific to bring these events and have that type of discussion?”
Other Women’s History Month events include ASuop A&E Celebrates International Women’s Day, Women of Distinction Awards and an Art During Pandemic exhibition.
