The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) has selected Dr. Michelle Brady for the 2018 Enid A. Neidle Scholar-in-Residence Program. The program offers the recipient a unique opportunity to focus on issues affecting women faculty members in dental education. Dr. Brady serves as an assistant professor of clinical oral health and group practice leader at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.

Dr. Brady will receive a stipend to pursue a cumulative two- to three-month fellowship at the ADEA office in Washington, DC. She will be working on the topic of "A Development Model to Support Female Faculty Academic Advancement and Leadership Potential in a Dental School Environment," with the goal of creating a pathway for female faculty to develop, starting as students.

"This grant gives me the opportunity to work at ADEA's national office and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing women in dental academia on a national level," she said. "The project will involve qualitative analysis of interviews conducted with women who have achieved success not only in inter-professional healthcare groups but also in business and government."

In addition to her role as a faculty member, Dr. Brady currently serves on the Dental Faculty Council and represents University of the Pacific on the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce WELL (Women Empowering through Leadership and Learning) Committee, among other activities. Her interests are related to development of all faculty members but particularly those issues that relate to women. Dr. Brady made the transition herself from full-time dental practice to a full-time teaching position with administrative responsibilities in a dental school. She is a wife and mother and understands the challenge to find work-life balance, while endeavoring to achieve success at work and at home.

This Scholar-in-Residence Program honors Enid A. Neidle, former President of ADEA (1985-86). Under her leadership, ADEA adopted its policy of promoting the advancement of women in dental education. The program is open to full-time woman faculty members who belong to ADEA, with a primary teaching appointment in a predoctoral or advanced dental educational program (including dental hygiene) at an ADEA member institution.
