Dugoni School Alumnus Turns TV Appearance into Fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy Association

Dugoni School alumnus Dr. Paul Chu '02, a pediatric dentist at Rye Pediatric Dentistry in Rye, New York, is that rare individual. In 2015, he appeared on AMC's Comic Book Men, selling a very rare prototype Boba Fett figure. This year, he was selected to be on the show again, this time for a collection of Star Wars figures from around the world, but before agreeing to film, he had one condition.
"My brother passed away in 1998, due to complications from muscular dystrophy," says Chu, who planned to donate 100% of proceeds from collectible sales, and wanted the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to be mentioned in the show. "The producers agreed this time."
In the episode, Chu bargained hard as he sold a rare figurine of Yoda from France, earning $2,500 to give to the MDA.
"Even more special: The MDA came to my dental office so I could present them with the check." Chu has a patient with Duchenne's, so he made sure that he and his mother were present.
In addition to his role at Rye Pediatric Dentistry, Chu serves as director of the pediatric dental residency program at St. Barnabas Hospital (SBH Health System) in the Bronx, New York.
