Andy Franz, professor of chemistry, Joan Lin-Cereghino, professor of biological sciences, and Geoff Lin-Cereghino, professor of biological sciences, received a $298,426 Academic Research Enhancement Award from the National Institutes of Health for their grant entitled "Analysis of Secretory Mechanisms and Heterologous Proteins in Pichia pastoris."  

McGeorge School of Law

Michael P. Malloy, distinguished professor of law, had treatise, "Economic Sanctions and U.S. Trade" repeatedly cited in Perry S. Bechky, "Sanctions and the Blurred Boundaries of International Economic Law," published in the Missouri Law Review (Vol. 83).  

Development and Marketing and Communications

Johanna Bakmas, associate director of development and alumni communications in Marketing and Communications, and Amy Martin, assistant director of donor relations, won a CASE 2018 Circle of Excellence Gold Award for "Endowment Reporting for the 21st Century."

Edmond Bedrossian, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, and Chan Park, associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, co-authored the chapter, "Surgical and Biomechanical Considerations when Using the Zygoma Implant," and Bedrossian co-authored the chapter "Surgical Protocol for the Placement of the Zygomatic Implant: A Graftless Approach for Treatment of the Edentulous Maxilla" in the textbook, "Graftless Solutions for the Edentulous Patient," published by Springer.

Presentations

Melissa Davies, Assistant Professor of health, exercise and sport sciences, presented "When Athletes don't "Stick to Sports:" The Relationship between Athlete Activism and Sport Consumer Behavior" at the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on June 7. She also presented an "Introduction to Photoshop" activity at the NASSM Teaching and Learning Fair.  

Helene Flohic, assistant professor of physics, gave an invited talk on "Energy for Global Citizens" at the Physics Research and Education Gordon Research Conference on Novel Research in Energy Topics, and Transformative Methods for Teaching Undergraduate Students About Energy Concepts, held June 10–15 at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island.  

Jeffrey Hole, Associate Professor of English, presented his paper "Constitutive Forms and Body Politics" on the Catharine Maria Sedgwick Society's American Enchantment roundtable and presented his paper "Thanatopolitics and the Managerial Regime" on the Melville Society's Bartleby Now panel at the American Literature Association 29th annual conference in San Francisco May 24–27.

Health, Exercise and Sport Sciences students at conferencePacific faculty members Courtney Jensen '08, assistant professor of health, exercise and sport sciences, Mark VanNess, professor of health, exercise and sport sciences, and Alexis King '15, '17, adjunct professor of health, exercise and sport sciences, accompanied 32 Pacific students and alumni who presented research at the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) annual meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 29–June 2. Their research will also be published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise (Vol. 50, No. 5). ACSM is the largest, most prestigious organization in this field and this is its largest conference. Pacific had more than twice the number of student research projects accepted for presentation at the conference of any other institution represented. Projects that were presented and published:

Cary Bricker, professor of lawyering skills, gave a presentation on a new course she created on the Art of Plea Bargaining, including discussion covering student learning outcomes and assessments, at the Educating Advocates: Teaching Advocacy conference May 21–23, at Stetson University Law School in Gulfport, Florida.   

Michael P. Malloy, distinguished professor of law, served as a member of the organizing committee for the 15th Annual International Conference on Law, which will be held July 16–19 in Athens, Greece, sponsored by the Athens Institute for Education and Research. He will present a paper, "Interdisciplinarity: Classic Crossover Cases and Effective Law Pedagogy," which examines the justifications and rationales in support of interdisciplinary study and considers interdisciplinarity within the law school curriculum.  

Francis J. Mootz III, professor of law, served as panelist and co-organizer for the Rhetoric Society of America Biennial Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 31–June 3.
