Corey Stocco, assistant professor of psychology, served as a subject matter expert for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board in Littleton, Colorado. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc. was established in 1998 to meet professional credentialing needs identified by behavior analysts, governments and consumers of behavior analysis services.  

Development and Alumni Relations, Marketing and Communications and Enrollment Management

Pacific was recognized by the Council in Support of Education (CASE) at the CASE District VII Awards of Excellence ceremony on Feb. 21. The awards showcase best practices in alumni relations, fundraising, public/government relations, advancement services, special events and outstanding communications. University of the Pacific received three awards.

• University Development and Alumni Relations - Silver Award for "Homecoming with Purpose."
• The Office of Marketing and Communications, working in collaboration with Enrollment Management, - Gold Award for "Tiger Day Instagram Page" (@uoptigerday on Instagram) and Bronze Award for "Undergraduate Admissions Viewbook"  

Publications

College of the Pacific

Jessica Grady, Assistant Professor of Psychology, co-authored the article "Shy toddlers act bold: The roles of respiratory sinus arrhythmia and parent emotion language" in the journal Infant Behavior and Development. Results of the study on parent and child factors that may contribute to healthy social behaviors in shy toddlers indicated that child physiological regulation and parent emotion language may each help shy toddlers to socially engage. This work was supported by funding through the Scholarly and Artistic Activities Grant and College Research Fund.  

Jane Khudyakov, assistant professor of biological sciences, and graduate students Jared Deyarmin '19, Molly McCormley '18 and Laura Pujade Busqueta '17,  '19, and undergraduate student Alicia Stephan '18 co-authored the article "Blubber transcriptome responses to repeated ACTH administration in a marine mammal" in the journal Scientific Reports.    

Ajna Rivera, associate professor of biological sciences, and Eric Wictor '16, '19 were co-authors on the article "Secreted frizzled related protein is a target of PaxB and plays a role in aquiferous system development in the freshwater sponge, Ephydatia muelleri," published in PLOS ONE. Her research team found an interaction between two genetic pathways in a freshwater sponge, which has nearly all the same gene families as humans but lacks almost all of our complex organs and systems.

Franklin Gevurtz, distinguished professor of law, had his article, "The Shareholder Approval Conundrum," accepted for publication in the Boston College Law Review.  

Michael P. Malloy, distinguished professor of law, had the second of five 2019 supplements for his three-volume treatise, "Banking Law and Regulation," published by Wolters Kluwer.  

Stephen McCaffrey, distinguished professor of law, published "Introduction: The Path to the UN Watercourses Convention and Beyond," in Laurence Boisson de Chazournes, Makane Moise Mbengue, Mara Tignino & Komlan Sangbana, eds., "The UN Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses: A Commentary," published by Oxford University Press (2018).  

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Robert F. Halliwell, professor of physiology and pharmacology, and Parto S. Khansari '07, co-authored "Mechanisms Underlying Neuroprotection by the NSAID, Mefenamic Acid in an Experimental Model of Stroke" in Frontiers in Neuroscience, Feb. 7, 2019.  

Sachin A. Shah, associate professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator at Travis AFB, co-authored "Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Risk: A Meta-analysis," published in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy, Jan. 30, 2019. Shah co-authored "Effect of water-soluble cinnamon extract on electrocardiographic parameters: An analysis of the CiNNaMON trial" published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine, December 2018. Shah co-authored "Review of the landscape and legal considerations" in American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, Feb. 1, 2018.  

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Eberhardt School of Business

Dara Szyliowicz, associate professor of management, and Peter Hilsenrath, Joseph M. Long Chair of Healthcare Management and Professor of Economics, co-authored the article, "Medical Marijuana Knowledge and Attitudes: A Survey of the California Pharmacists Association," in the Journal of Primary Care & Community Health, Feb. 22, 2019.

Melissa Davies, assistant professor of health, exercise and sport sciences, and Lara Killick, associate professor and chair of health, exercise and sport sciences, presented "Ensuring Experiential Learning is About More Than the Experience: Challenges and Opportunities in Teaching an Experiential Learning Sport Globalization Class" at the Global Sport Business Association Conference on March 3, 2019.  

Jianhua Ren, professor of chemistry, and several students gave three oral presentations and a poster presentation at the Conference on Ion Chemistry and Mass Spectrometry held in Lake Arrowhead, California, Jan. 18–20, 2019.

Caroline Schroeder, professor of religious studies, presented the paper, "Understanding Space and Place through Digital Text Analysis," at the Third PAThs International Conference: "Coptic Literature in Context. The Contexts of Coptic Literature. Late Antique Egypt in a dialogue between literature, archaeology and digital humanities" at Sapienza University in Rome.

Cary Bricker, professor of lawyering skills, presented on mindfulness for trial lawyers at the Educating Advocates of Trial Advocacy (EATS) conference put on by the University of Missouri, Kansas City, Dec. 6–9, 2018.  

Leslie Jacobs, professor of law, spoke on the panel "100 years of incitement" at the Association of American Law Schools annual meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, in January.

Michael P. Malloy, distinguished professor of law, will be moderating a panel on the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). He also will present "Recent Trends You Can CISG" in decisions applying the convention in contracts cases at the 14th annual International Conference on Contracts, KCon XIV, at Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, Louisiana, March 8–9, 2019.  

Jarrod Wong, professor of law, presented on "Investor-State Dispute Settlement in NAFTA 2.0," at the conference NAFTA 2.0: The Puzzle of North America as a Region, held at Texas A&M University Law School, Feb. 28 – March 1, 2019.

Elaine Law, assistant clinical professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for San Jose, and Yvonne Mai '13, '15, assistant professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for Stockton, presented "A New Layered Learning Model: Integrating IPPE and APPE Learning to Maximize the Learner's Experiences with Minimal Impact on Preceptor Load" at the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) West Coast Preceptor Conference, April 27-29, 2018 in Asilomar, California.  

Nancy N. Nguyen, clinical professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for Palo Alto, and Sachin A. Shah, professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for Travis AFB, presented "Facilitating Student and Resident Clinical Research: From Idea to Manuscript" at the 2018 CSHP West Coast Preceptor Conference.  

Marie Scott, associate clinical professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for San Diego, presented "Teaching the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process: A Guide for Preceptors" at the 2018 CSHP West Coast Preceptor Conference.  

Sachin A. Shah, professor of pharmacy practice, Michael McClain '18, Kathy Quach '18, were co-authors of the presentation "Impact of Empathetic Touch Therapy on Reducing Feelings of Stress, Anxiety, Pain and Depression" at the American Heart Association's EPI | Lifestyles Spring 2018 Scientific Sessions in New Orleans, March 20-23, 2018.  

Clifford A. Young, associate clinical professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for Fresno, presented "The Pharmacist First Responder" at the California Pharmacists Association Western Pharmacy Exchange in San Diego, April 12–15, 2018.  

School of International Studies

Dan O'Neill, associate professor of political science, presented "Dividing ASEAN while Claiming the South China Sea: Chinese Financial Power Projection in Southeast Asia," a talk on his recently released book, for the International and Area Studies Department at Washington University in St. Louis on Feb. 18. 2019. He also fielded questions and led a discussion on China for the State Failure, State Success and Development class.  

University Libraries

Mary M. Somerville, University Librarian, (2019) was a session facilitator on "Public-Private Partnerships" at the 5th Next Generation Learning Spaces conference in Los Angeles, Feb. 25–27, 2019.   

Veronica Wells, library faculty chair and associate professor, gave two presentations at the recent annual meeting of the Music Library Association in St. Louis, Missouri: she co-presented "Lessons in Diversity and Bias," and presented the poster "How Students' Information Literacy Skills Change Over Time: A Longitudinal Study."
