Michael Leonard, visiting assistant professor of art and graphic design, served as a judge for the 2019 Spring Art Show for the Lodi Unified School District grades 9–12. The show is sponsored by the Lodi Unified School District and the Got Kids Foundation.  

Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry

Janelle Palomares, student affairs coordinator, was selected as the dental school's Employee of the Quarter.   

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Jeannene M. Ward-Lonergan, department chair and professor of speech-language pathology, will serve on the "Improving Literacy" Transition Team organized by the California Department of Education's State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.  

Business and Finance

Budget and Financial Services held their semi-annual employee recognition award ceremony on May 23. Recipients who exemplify the four key attributes of leadership, collaboration, initiative and innovation are nominated by their department colleagues. The winners of the Spring 2019 Summit Awards are:

Publications

College of the Pacific

Martín Camps, professor of modern languages and literature, published "Frontera INC" in Dispatches from the Poetry Wars. He also published the review "Álbum de cineasta: Roma de Alfonso Cuarón y la lucha (doméstica) de clases" on the movie "Roma" by Alfonso Cuarón in Lamás Médula, a journal in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  

Melissa Davies, assistant professor of health, exercise and sport sciences, published the article "Understanding the adventure sportscape's impact on consumers' destination image and event conative loyalty" in the journal Event Management.   

Alan Lenzi, professor of religious studies, published the article "Ancient Mesopotamian Scholars, Ritual Speech, and Theorizing Religion without 'Theory' or 'Religion'" in the volume "Theorizing 'Religion' in Antiquity: From Eusebeia to Impietas," edited by N.P. Roubekas as part of the series, Studies in Ancient Religion and Culture. London, published by Equinox: 2019.  

Zach Stahlschmidt, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, co-authored the research article "Effects of Habitat Features and Season on Vertebrate Communities in Southern Georgia, U.S.A.," which was accepted for publication by the journal Biodiversity. The article was drawn from a thesis chapter by former graduate student George Todd '16 for whom Stahlschmidt served as thesis adviser.

Len Tolstunov, associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, published the letter to the editor, "Importance of Recognizing an Association Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders" in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (77:4).

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Xin Guo, professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, along with Yunzhou Fang '14, Mallika Vadlamudi '19, and Yingbo Huang '19 published "Lipid-Coated, pH-Sensitive Magnesium Phosphate Particles for Intracellular Protein Delivery" in Pharmaceutical Research, June 2019. 

Gabriella Musacchia, assistant professor of audiology co-authored a book chapter "Music Cognition and Education" in "Developing Minds in the Digital Age: Towards a Science of Learning for 21st Century Education," published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, April 2019.

Presentations and artistic activity

Carla Strickland-Hughes, assistant professor of psychology, was a co-author on research presented by undergraduate research assistants in her Aging and Cognitive Training Laboratory at the 49th annual Western Psychology Conference for Undergraduate Research on May 4:

• Mercedes E. Ball '19 presented the poster "Personal Control Beliefs and Memory in Aging: Mediation by Health and Lifestyle." Ball was awarded Best Poster Presentation.
• Kezhia Barba '19 and Lluvia Garnica '19 presented the poster "Socializing More Linked with Better Aging Attitudes."
• Sebastian Getman '19 presented the poster "Are You Threatening Me? Responses to Age-Based Stereotype Threat."

Chemistry faculty and students presented research at the 31st American Chemical Society Northern California Undergraduate Chemistry Symposium at Santa Clara University on May 4.

• Oscar Mendoza '19, Mulinde R. Ruyonga '19, and Vyacheslav V. Samoshin, professor of chemistry, presented the poster "Exploration of trans-2-(Aminosulfanyl)-cyclohexanols derivatives as potential pH-triggered conformational switches."
• Eileen Rad '19, Faith Ching '20, Ethan Trinh '20, and Liang Xue, associate professor of chemistry, presented the poster "Investigation of the binding of aminoglycosides to G-quadruplex DNA using the FID assay."
• Aaron Tran '20, and Liang Xue presented their co-authored poster "Binding of flavonoid derivatives to G-quadruplex DNA studied by molecular docking."  

McGeorge School of Law

Franklin Gevurtz, distinguished professor of law, will present the article "The Shareholder Approval Conundrum" at the National Business Law Scholars Conference at UC Berkeley in June.

Leslie Gielow Jacobs, professor of law, gave a lunch talk for Women Lawyers of Sacramento on "Changes in Bias Law and the Supreme Court" on May 23.

Michael Hunter Schwartz, dean and professor of law, was invited to present his paper "Pernicious Legal Education Myths: Towards a Modality-Less Model for Teaching Excellence," at the symposium Online Learning and the Future of Legal Education held at Syracuse University School of Law; conducted a workshop on "Outcomes Assessment" for the faculty at Southwestern Law School; and participated as a panelist for the American Bar Association podcast, "Adjunct Faculty-Supporting Essential Partners in the Law School Curriculum," focused on selecting, training and supporting adjunct law faculty. 

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Gabriella Musacchia, assistant professor of audiology, along with Devin Inabinet '20, Jan de la Cruz '18, Justin Cha '21 and Kevin Ng '21, presented the poster "Discrimination of Periodicity and Pitch Effects in Musicians and Non-musicians" at the 42nd Association of Research in Otolaryngology annual meeting on Feb. 10 in Baltimore.  

Zhu Zhou '14, assistant clinical professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, Miki Susanto Park, professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, William K. Chan, professor and chair of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Medicinal Chemistry and John C. Livesey, associate professor and physiology and pharmacology, presented the poster "Effect of Rutaecarpine on the Benzo(a)pyrene-Induced DNA Damage In Vitro" on April 8 at the 2019 Experimental Biology conference in Orlando, Florida.
