Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry

The Dugoni School of Dentistry hosted a successful Special Smiles event on April 6, with volunteers providing screenings and treatment to 30 patients with special needs. This is the second year the school has held the event on the San Francisco Campus. It has also been held at the Union City Dental Care Center for the past six years. The Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) and Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) student groups handled the majority of the arrangements, with support from many faculty and staff members, and website support from the Southern Alameda County Dental Society.  

Mustafa Radif, assistant professor of dental hygiene, was awarded a $19,825 grant from Pacific's Technology in Education Committee for his proposal "Using Oral Anesthesia Mannequin to enhance student's learning in sim-lab and clinical settings."  

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Edward Rogan, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, received the Designated Fellow of CPhA award at the California Pharmacists Association Western Pharmacy Exchange, held April 12–14 in Los Angeles.

Liang Xue, associate professor of chemistry, was a co-author with Siwen Wang ’18, Dazhou Yang '13, Mandeep Singh '20, Hyun Joo, visiting lecturer in chemistry, Vanessa Rangel '23, Aaron Tran '20 and Erich Phan '21 on the paper, "Thiazole Orange - Spermine Conjugate: A Potent Human Telomerase Inhibitor Comparable to BRACO-19," published in European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.  

Zach Stahlschmidt, assistant professor of biological sciences, was the thesis adviser for Jordan Glass ’18, whose thesis, "Should I stay or should I go? Complex environments influence the developmental plasticity of flight capacity and flight-related trade-offs," was accepted by the Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, which "is a direct descendant of the oldest biological journal in the world."

David M. Ojcius, professor and department chair of biomedical sciences, co-edited "Reinventing Plastics," a publication of the Veolia Institute, part of its FACTS Reports series. The idea for the issue, which looks at the history, manufacture, use and disposal of plastics, came from Ojcius who also wrote the introduction for the special issue. More ›  

Cássio Luiz Coutinho Almeida-da-Silva, visiting scientist in biomedical sciences, and David M. Ojcius, professor of biomedical sciences, co-authored the article "P2X7 receptor-mediated leukocyte recruitment and Porphyromonas gingivalis clearance requires IL-1β production and autocrine IL-1 receptor activation," published in the journal Immunobiology 224(1).  

McGeorge School of Law

Michael P. Malloy, distinguished professor of law, had the third of five 2019 supplements for his three-volume treatise, "Banking Law and Regulation," released by law publisher Wolters Kluwer. Malloy offers up-to-date coverage of current developments in the regulation of depository institutions, including changes in financial rating systems for holding companies; effects of the run-up to Brexit on London banking; and the implementation of the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act (EGRRCPA).

Teresa Bergman, professor and chair of communication, participated in the panel "Rhetorical Explorations of Montgomery's Racial Justice Commemorative Sites" at the Southern States Communication Conference in Montgomery, Alabama.  

Cosana Eram, associate professor of modern languages and literature, gave two invited lectures, "Who's Afraid of... The Historical Avant-Garde?" and "The Avant-Garde Logic of Dispute: Isidore Isou and 'l'épuration de la matière lyrique'," in the Department of Comparative Literature at the University Babes-Bolyaiin Cluj, Romania, on April 15.   

Caroline Schroeder, professor of religious studies, presented the paper "Coptic Studies in a Digital Age: Building Communities, Challenging Orthodoxies," was a panelist in the plenary panel "Computational Tools and the Cross-Cultural Study of Literature," and presented a demo session on the tools and technologies created by the project Coptic Scriptorium during the workshop Digital Humanities Beyond Modern English: Computational Analysis of Premodern and Non-Western Literature, held at Dartmouth College April 23–25. Schroeder  

Schroeder also presented the paper "A Collaborative Ecosystem for Digital Coptic Studies" in the Workshop on Digital Humanities to Preserve Knowledge and Cultural Heritage at the Stanford University Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis on April 15. She delivered the lecture "Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage: Building Communities and Challenging Orthodoxies" at the University of Oklahoma on April 11, and presented "Ancient Languages in a Digital Age: Building an Online Environment for Coptic Studies" at the Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology Colloquium, held at UC Berkeley on April 4.  

Lisa Tromovitch, professor of Media X, produced an event with the Livermore Shakespeare Festival featuring Harlem Shakespeare Festival founder, artistic director and actress Debra Ann Byrd in "Becoming Othello," about Byrd's journey as the first African American woman to play Othello, on April 25.  

McGeorge School of Law

Adrienne Brungess, professor of lawyering skills, was invited by the mediator coordinator at superior court to present "Dealing with Difficult Parties and Addressing Future Issues" on May 9 to the group of mediators who work with civil harassment litigants.   

Stephanie Thompson, professor of lawyering skills, presented "Evolution of an Academic Support Program," at the Association of Academic Support Educators conference May 21–23 in Seattle, Washington.

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

You Li '19, Miki Park, professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, William Chan, professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, John Livesey, associate professor of physiology and pharmacology, and Zhu Zhou, assistant clinical professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, co-authored the poster "Effect of Rutaecarpine on the Benzo(a)pyrene-Induced DNA Damage In Vitro" presented at the Experimental Biology 2019 conference on April 8 in Orlando, Florida.

Peter Hilsenrath, Joseph M. Long Chair of Healthcare Management and professor of economics, was the Dean's Distinguished Speaker on April 12 during the Faculty Research Day at the Brad D. Smith Schools of Business of Marshall University in West Virginia.

Nicole Grady, special collections librarian, presented the poster "Hidden Treasures at Pacific: Special Collections' Book Inventory Project" at the Society of California Archivists Annual General Meeting in Long Beach, California.  

Mia Watts, archives project Specialist, presented her senior project, "Hidden Ligatures: The Mystery of the Pacific Library's Gradual," at the Society of California Archivists Annual General Meeting in Long Beach.
