College of the Pacific

Andreea Boboc, associate professor of English, is the recipient of the 2019 Stephen E. Corson Award for Distinguished Teaching of Freshmen.

Qingwen Dong, professor of communication, received a $16,500 grant from San Joaquin County Department of Public Works' Solid Waste Division to conduct a study on San Joaquin Resident Environmental Attitudes. 

McGeorge School of Law

McGeorge’s student chapter of the American Constitution Society co-hosted a successful U.S. Supreme Court Preview event with the Capital Center for Law and Policy and the Sacramento Lawyers' Chapter of ACS. Students, members of the Sacramento Lawyers' Chapter of ACS and McGeorge alumni gathered in the courtroom for a discussion on the upcoming Supreme Court session.

Liz Fenton and Cathy Christian, professors of law, guided McGeorge's Legislative and Public Policy Clinic students Stephanie Chavez and Spencer Saks, who recently had their bill, Senate Bill 338 (Hueso) — The California Senior and Disability Justice Act — signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom on Oct. 8.

Courtney Lee, professor of lawyering skills, is the Association of American Law School’s 2019 chair for the section on animal law and planned the 2020 AALS program.

Ed Telfeyan, co-director of the McGeorge Advocacy Center and director of the McGeorge Moot Court Program, and Cary Bricker, Advocacy Center co-director, in January will co-chair and direct the Association of American Law School’s Conference breakfast on the topic of "Bringing the Classroom into the Competitions.”

Jarrod Wong, professor of law and co-director of the McGeorge Global Center for Business and Development, is organizing and running the Global Center International faculty breakfast program at the annual American Association of Law Schools conference in Washington, D.C. in January 2020.

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Audrey J. Lee, professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for San Francisco, was named the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) 2019 affiliate chapter “Volunteer of the Year.” She was recognized at the CSHP Seminar 2019 awards ceremony on Oct. 19 in Anaheim.

Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry

Steven J. Sadowsky, professor of preventive and restorative dentistry, co-authored the editorial " How should we communicate implant treatment risk to a patient?" published in the Journal of the American Dental Association.

College of the Pacific

Qingwen Dong, professor of communication, and Chinese visiting professor Jinyao Zhang have published a book in Chinese titled "Key Words of Arts of Film and Television in China and America."

Helene Flohic, associate professor of physics, had her paper "An Improved Test of the Binary Black Hole Hypothesis for Quasars with Double-peaked Broad Balmer Lines" accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

RyanHill, associate professor of biological sciences, along with a collaborator from Boston University, had their article "Unprofitability of Neotropical Adelpha and its potential mechanisms: a role for adult resources?” published in the Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society.

Alan Lenzi, professor of religious studies, has published the book “An Introduction to Akkadian Literature: Contexts and Content" with Eisenbrauns, an imprint of Penn State University Press.

Matthew Normand, professor of psychology, Hank Schlinger, Amir Cruz-Khalili ’16 and Katrina Bettencourt ’15 had their study " Use of Repeated Within-Subject Measures to Assess Infants’ Preference for Similar Others" published in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Psychology.

Vyacheslav Samoshin, professor of chemistry, has his research paper "trans-2-(Azaarylsulfanyl)cyclohexanol derivatives as potential pH-triggered conformational switches" published in Mendeleev Communications.

Xiaojing Zhou, professor, chair of the English department and director of ethnic studies, had her translations of six poems by Zheng Xiaoqiong “A Child Migrant Worker from the Cold Mountain,” “Xurong,” “Hu Zhimin,” “Iron Bird,” “Train” and “Middle-Aged Prostitutes” published on the website for the 50th Poetry International Festival Rotterdam.

McGeorge School of Law

Michael Malloy, professor of law, had two of his essays, "Housing Market Deterioration in the Wake of the U.S. Subprime Mortgage Market Meltdown: Disturbing Metrics Point to Linkage Between Housing Policy and Financial Services Policy" and "Housing Policy and the Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision," cited in the newly issued Policy Framework for Sustainable Real Estate Markets 9 n.11, 30 n.49 (rev. 2019).

Malloy was a principal contributor of the UN Economic Commission for Europe’s Policy Framework for Sustainable Real Estate Markets report. Malloy had his 1986 article “State Change-in-Bank-Control Statutes: Does Mite Make Light of Recent Trends?" cited in the article "Acquisition of Control of a State Member Bank, Bank Holding Company, or Savings and Loan Holding Company Pursuant to the Change In Bank Control Act" 38 Rev. Banking & Fin. L. 209, 239 n.138 (2018). Malloy also had the last of five 2019 supplements of his three-volume treatise “Banking Law and Regulation” released by publisher Wolters Kluwer.

Michael Hunter Schwartz, Pacific's interim provost, had his article “Towards a Modality-Less Model for Excellence in Law School Teaching” accepted and will be published in Volume 70 of the Syracuse Law Review.

John Sprankling, professor of law, had his article “Owning Marijuana” published as the lead article in Volume 14 of the Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy.

Jon Wainwright, project manager for the Capital Center for Law and Policy, published an episode of the Capital Center's podcast, The CAPimpact Podcast, featuring faculty from Pace Law School. The podcast published on Sept. 19 and was featured by LexBlog on Sept. 20 as one of their top posts of the day.

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Veronica T. Bandy, professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for Sacramento, along with James H. Wall ’16, Jason Bandy ’00 and Hooria Iqbal ’18, published the article “A Review of Direct Oral Anticoagulants” in the September/October issue of California Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.

Eric Boyce, professor and associate dean for Academic Affair, Bhaskara Jasti, professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, John Livesey, associate professor of physiology and pharmacology and Phil Oppenheimer, dean and professor of pharmacy practice, had their article “ Development, Implementation and Assessment of a Comprehensive Strategic Plan in a School of Pharmacy” published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education 2019.
Boyce also co-authored the article “ Characterization of Use of the Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes Assessment Across Accredited Colleges of Pharmacy” published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education 2019.

Lena Kang-Birken, associate professor of pharmacy practice, co-authored and published the article “ HIV Viral Rebound Due to a Possible Drug-Drug Interaction between Elvitegravir/Cobicistat/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Alafenamide and Calcium-Containing Products: Report of 2 Cases” in the Journal of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care.”

Sonoko Kawakatsu, assistant clinical professor of pharmacy practice, was a co-author in the published article “ Population pharmacokinetic analysis of high-dose methotrexate in pediatric and adult oncology patients.”

Xiaohan Liu, assistant clinical professor, Sachin A. Shah, professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for Travis AFB, and two other contributors (authors? researchers?), published the article “ Differences in glucose levels between left and right arm” in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology.

Deepti Vyas, associate professor and director of Interprofessional Education and Instructional Design, Marcus Ravnan, associate dean for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and Nareeta Sherman, fellow lecturer, along with others, published the article “A Focused Update on the Role of Non-Statin Agents in the Management of Atherosclerotic Disease” in the California Journal of Health Systems Pharmacists. 2017;29(6): 189-194.

University Libraries

Michele Gibney, head of publishing and scholarship support, was asked to author an updated article on Library Connect concerning Pacific's Open Educational Resources (OER) program and Open Access journals titled “ Look at us now! Year three of our OER Grant program and OA journals.”

Mary Somerville, university librarian, and Gibney have an article in the upcoming IFLA Journal titled " Curating Knowledge, Creating Change: University Knowledge Center, Kosovo National Transition."

Presentations and artistic activity

College of the Pacific

Teresa Bergman, professor, chair of the Department of Communication and director of Graduate Studies, had her lecture "Public Commemoration in the U.S.: Context, Diversity, and Challenges" recorded live by University of Ohio students for the Scripps College of Communication. 

Andreea Boboc, associate professor of English, presented her paper “ The (Im)Materiality of Intent in the Tale of Beryn” at the International Medieval Congress in Leeds, U.K., in July.

Qingwen Dong, professor of communication, gave the keynote speech “Challenges Facing Digital Journalism” at the National Communication Association-Shenzhen Communication Forum in June in Shenzhen, China. He also was one of the organizers for the forum.  

Lydia Fox, associate professor of geological and environmental sciences, presented a poster titled " Incorporating GeoHealth topics into the curriculum when there is not room for a new course" at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sept. 22.

Marie Lee, associate professor of art and graphic design, had her exhibition “ Kam Women Artisans of China” open at the Naprstek Museum, a branch of the Czech National Museum in Prague, Czech Republic, in September. Lee also gave workshops on Kam papermaking, weaving on backstrap loom and screen printing of traditional motifs to the public and gave the talk "Hidden Kam Then and Now" at the museum.

Alan Lenzi, professor and chair of religious studies, presented his paper "King Nabonidus, the Righteous Sufferer" at Boston College's symposium The Spirit of Scholarship: Biblical and Mesopotamian Studies in the Roman Catholic Academy on Sept. 24.

Liang Xue, associate professor of chemistry, gave an invited talk on "Inhibition of Human Telomerase Via G-quadruplex Formation" at California State University, Stanislaus on Oct. 4.

Xiaojing Zhou, professor, chair of the English department and director of ethnic studies, presented the paper “Chamorro Writings from Guåhan (Guam) as an Archive of Imperial Ruination, Indigenous Resistance, and Environmental Activism” at the Biennial Conference of Association for the Studies of Literature and Environment at University of California, Davis, in June.

Conservatory of Music

Keith Hatschek, professor and program director for music management and music industry studies, Michele Gibney, head of publishing and scholarship support, and student Nicole Wasnock held a presentation about the Conservatory’s undergraduate written and edited journal at the Music Librarian Association’s California Chapter meeting at Stanford University on Sept. 13.

Eberhardt School of Business

Peter Hilsenrath, professor of economics and Joseph M. Long Chair of Healthcare Management, presented results of a survey developed by Dara Szyliowicz, associate professor of management, and student  Brandon Le ’19 to the California Pharmacists Association on Sept. 13 in Sacramento. The survey was developed in collaboration with the California Pharmacists Association and a related paper was published in the Journal of Primary Care & Community Health.

McGeorge School of Law

Michael Colatrella, McGeorge School of Law interim dean and professor of law, presented on his? article in-progress “Leading in the Law: Negotiation, Mediation, and Collaboration as Academic Leadership Skills” at the 13th Annual Alternative Dispute Resolution Section Works-in-Progress Conference held in October at University of Nevada Las Vegas.

Leslie Gielow Jacobs, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy professor of law and director of the Capital Center for Law and Policy, is one of five panelists at the Women in Legal Education presentation “A Century Since Suffrage: How Did We Get Here? Where Will We Go? How Will We Get There?” at the annual American Association of Law Schools conference in Washington, D.C. in January 2020.

Michael Malloy, professor of law, in July attended and was a co-host of the 16th annual International Conference on Law in Athens, Greece, sponsored by the Athens Institute for Education and Research.

Michael Hunter Schwartz, Pacific's interim provost, was an invited participant at the 2019 Roundtable on Law's Futures in September at Northwestern University School of Law. Schwartz also was a panelist in “Technology Driven Trends in Tax Law Training" 2019 Fall American Bar Association Tax Section Meeting in October in San Francisco.

Brian Slocum, professor of law, presented "Ejusdem Generis? Statutory Interpretation for Lawyers" at the October California Lawyers Association annual meeting.

Jarrod Wong, professor of law and co-director of the McGeorge Global Center for Business and Development, presented "The Chimera of the World Investment Court" at the 13th Annual Alternative Dispute Resolution Section Works-in-Progress Conference held in October at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Wong also will moderate a panel on international economic law at the 2019 American Society of International Law Midyear Meeting and Research Forum on Nov. 6.

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Todd Davenport, program director and professor of physical therapy, along with Vanneta Kennedy, presented “ Leaky Pipelines and Revolving Doors: Why Diversity and Inclusion in Physical Therapy Seem Elusive” at the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting in January. Davenport, along with others, also presented “ Community Health Promotion Grant-Writing Workshop” and “ CPG to Recognize Health Conditions That May Necessitate Referral to a Physician. ”

Robert Halliwell, professor of physiology and pharmacology, presented “Progress in the Use of Human Stem Cells to Predict Developmental Neurotoxicity” at the Select Biosciences Conference on Stem Cells in Drug Discovery and Toxicity Screening 2019 in Coronado, California, October 14–16.

Halliwell, Brittany Tran ’21, Anika Patel ’21 and Stephanie Nguyen ’20 presented a workshop on "How to Keep a Healthy Brain Without Really Trying" for the Northern California Oromo Community Association on Sept. 29 in San Lorenzo, California.

Elaine Law, assistant clinical professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for San Jose, presented “Dealing with Entitlement in Experiential Pharmacy Education and the Workplace” at the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists Seminar conference in October in Anaheim.

Mark P. Walberg, associate clinical professor, along with others, presented “Pre-CISTM Course: Products in the Pharmacy for Preparing the Traveler; Water purification- exhibition of different products” at the 16th Conference of the International Society of Travel Medicine in Washington, D.C. in June. Walberg also co-presented “The Older Traveler — Pharmacist-Provided Care; To Vaccinate or Not? Efficacy, Safety, and Increased Need of Vaccines in the Older Traveler” and “Development of an Information Database for International Travelers Carrying and Obtaining Medicines Overseas” at the conference.

University Libraries

Michele Gibney, head of publishing and scholarship support, presented at the Open Repositories 2019 conference in Frankfurt, Germany this past summer. Her two posters were on Virtual Reality metadata for the Pacific digital repository, Scholarly Commons and the outcomes of her Fulbright Specialist posting to Kosovo from January 2019.
