Own experience prompts McGeorge student to change the family law system

Personal experience crystalized Shaun Brooks’ decision to practice family law when he was involved in a custody case related to his daughter during his first year at McGeorge. 

“I did not like the way the system was set up and the feeling of helplessness throughout, so I decided to do something about it,” he said. “My goal is to make the system more reflective of the needs of the modern family.”  

Brooks’ attorney allowed him to do most of the legal work and trial preparation for his custody trial, and afterward, he was offered successive internships with his lawyer’s firm. In addition to being a full-time father, he is also a student associate at Help-U-File Family Law, a legal assistance firm, and president of McGeorge’s Family Law Student Association. 

The support of the McGeorge community helped his law school career move along more smoothly than he expected, said Brooks.

“I would not have been able to handle this workload at any school other than McGeorge,” he said. “Classmates reach out to help unprompted, and professors are willing to meet around my schedule.”
