Career Services is proud to share Daniel Hong’s success after graduating from Pacific. Hong, an Applied Mathematics Major ’19, landed a position as a software engineer at an aerospace company named Lockheed Martin. 

Hong found the software engineer position on Indeed and worked closely in one-on-one sessions with a career advisor to acquire the necessary skills for the application process. “I really benefited from the groundwork such as getting ideas on resume building, tips on job searching, networking, and mock interviews,” says Hong. “There were also career events like how to build a solid LinkedIn profile that added really nicely to the one-on-one sessions.” 

Besides the support from career services, Hong strongly benefited from the classes offered at Pacific. Hong says that taking Pacific Seminar courses and English classes as general education was helpful for his career because he realized that engineering required more than just math skills. “Keep your writing skills sharp,” says Hong. “If they are not sharp already, go sharpen them. Engineering is not a ticket out of writing. Documentation is inevitable, and you will be glad that you kept all your plans and designs. They not only give you a place of reference, but also a place to point new team members to.”

Hong’s program also requires interaction and collaboration between different teams in the organization. His work at Lockheed Martin has provided him with the opportunity to regularly meet with colleagues to ensure expected deliverables and clarify concerns. He says that working with others makes his work easier because it provides everyone with information that may be essential to a project.
