Pacific Celebrates 40 Years of Delta Sigma Pi

Weber Hall

The Delta Sigma Pi reunion will take place on the lawn outside Weber Hall, home of the Eberhardt School of Business.

The Lambda Mu chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, “the foremost co-ed fraternity for business professionals,” will celebrate its 40th anniversary at Pacific October 12 during Homecoming and Family Weekend.

The nearly 120-year-old fraternity has long been recognized for its commitment to inclusivity, scholarship, and service, shaping new generations of business leaders across nearly 350 chapters with more than 300,000 initiated members. Delta Sigma Pi opened to women in 1975, distinguishing it also as the nation’s first co-ed business fraternity.

In its first four decades at Pacific, Lambda Mu initiated more than 900 members. Co-chaired by Greg Howell ’90, Jim Dugoni ’86 and Lauren Short ’11, the reunion will bring together business alumni and current students alike.

“Deltasig and Pacific were an important part of our development during our college years and engrained the importance of giving back. I hope lots of us will come to the reunion, re-engage and see friends that we haven't seen in years,” Howell said.

Howell views the fraternity as a launching pad for much of what he has accomplished since. He has worked for more than 30 years in financial services and with retirement plan providers. The professional development he received through Delta Sigma Pi led to a long involvement with Toastmasters International, a worldwide public speaking organization, which itself led to significant professional opportunities.

Howell completed two terms on Delta Sigma Pi’s national board and served as president and chairman of its foundation. Today he engages on a volunteer basis and remains involved with an alumni chapter in Denver.

“My commitment to stay involved in the community really started at Pacific and at Deltasig. The fraternity allowed us to practice our leadership skills in a real in a real way, and it really promoted the concept of service,” he said.

The fraternity currently has nearly 30 members who engage regularly in community service and social activities, guest speaker visits, networking events and professional workshops.

Lambda Mu’s reunion will take place from 2-4 p.m. on Pacific’s Stockton Campus outside Weber Hall, where the Eberhardt School of Business is now housed. Participants will have opportunities to tour Weber Hall and learn about Pacific’s historic ties with community businesses including Bank of Stockton, Grupe, Spanos and others.

Homecoming and Family Weekend attendees can also explore current offerings and activities at the business school, including the data analytics program, the investment club, gaming programs and internship opportunities.

“Delta Sigma Pi and the business school together helped us develop communication skills and confidence that are so important in the workplace,” Howell said.

“What Pacific allowed us to do in the classroom, Deltasig allowed us to apply outside it, which provided confidence and leadership skills. This reunion will be a wonderful opportunity to re-engage with people that were such an important part of that experience, and to see what that experience is like for today’s students.”
