Pacific Friday brings energy to campus

Pacific Friday, a tradition started during the pandemic to show university spirit, is being amplified.

There are now activities, giveaways and games every Friday at the Don and Karen DeRosa University Center from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., giving the campus an opportunity to build community in an exciting and engaging way.

“This was really fun,” said first-year student Chauntel Santillan at one of the recent Friday events. “Especially as a commuter, when we’re here and there’s stuff going on, it’s really nice.”

The idea to expand Pacific Friday to include an on-campus event was initiated by ASuop, Pacific’s student government group.

“We want students to know, Friday is the day we're going to wear Pacific gear and just be excited about all being here together,” said student government President Scout Cooper-Wilson.

“Our ASuop students wanted to feel a sense of energy on campus,” added Maria Blandizzi, vice president for student life. “It’s a fun way to engage and connect.”

ASuop and staff from different campus areas take turns hosting the weekly event.

A recent Pacific Friday hosted by Strategic Communications and Pacific Technology featured a foosball table, giant Jenga, photo booth and competitive mini corn hole game with Pacific swag handed out.

Other Pacific Fridays have included free tickets to a Pacific baseball game and doughnuts from a local shop.

“There’s a prize wheel that we're going to put out soon as well,” said Blandizzi. “Everybody's just trying to create a little bit more spirit.”

ASuop leaders hope the new tradition continues after they’ve graduated.

“I think having traditions is such an important aspect of someone's university experiences, so I'm really excited to see where this one goes,” said Scout Cooper-Wilson.

In addition to the social event at the DeRosa University Center, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear orange and black, tiger stripes or Pacific gear on Fridays.
