Pacific partners with Gilead to offer pharmacy fellowships
University of the Pacific’s Fellowship in Industry Program has partnered with Gilead Sciences to offer two new fellowships. The fellowships allow doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) graduates the opportunity to gain real-world experience in an environment centered on developing innovative therapeutics for life-threatening diseases.
“Gilead is committed to the development of top-notch clinical scientists and quantitative clinical pharmacologists and we are excited about this new partnership with University of the Pacific,” said Sandhya Ramanathan Girish, PhD, vice president of clinical pharmacology at Gilead Sciences.
Gilead Sciences, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Foster City, has developed medicines to prevent and treat life-threatening diseases, including HIV, viral hepatitis and cancer. Since their founding in 1987, Gilead has pioneered more than 25 products, including the first single tablet regimen to treat HIV. The company’s antiviral research led to the rapid advancement and delivery of the first U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved antiviral for COVID-19.

“The fellowships pair hands-on industry experience with guided mentorship,” said Sachin A. Shah, PharmD, FACC, FAHA, director of the Fellowship in Industry Program and professor of pharmacy practice. “Fellows get a behind-the-scenes look at clinical development at a global biopharmaceutical company, while developing the professional skills they will leverage throughout their careers.”
Founded in 2017, the Fellowship in Industry Program aims to provide exceptional biopharmaceutical industry training for PharmD graduates. The program is currently recruiting for two fellowships at Gilead in clinical operations and clinical pharmacology. The program is accepting and evaluating applications on a rolling basis.
The clinical operations fellowship will focus on project management of clinical trials. The clinical pharmacology fellowship will concentrate on designing and implementing integrated clinical pharmacology strategies, including modeling and simulation. Fellows will spend 90 percent of their time at Gilead. The balance of time will be spent at Pacific engaging with faculty and students.
