Quote of the Week
"I think people just assumd that since the fire was on, people would have left the stew bubbling and kept adding to it while it sat over the hot ashes."
— Ken Albala, MELMagazine.com, Sept. 7, 2019
Examples of how University of the Pacific was represented in the news media in recent days:
"How California got its name: California's name is tied to a 16th century Spanish romance novel," ABC10, Sept. 8, 2019: History's Bill Swagerty provided context and background on how California got its name for this webstory. "It's out of Spanish literature, no doubt about it, but it's very complex the story of how the geographic name evolved," Swagerty told ABC10. Part of the name comes from the Spanish novel "Las Sergas de Esplandián," which describes the island of the legendary queen, Califia. A cartographer in 1562 associated the area that is now Baja California with the phrase "Calida Fornax," or "hot, fiery furnace." It wasn't until the 1630s that was it discovered that California wasn't an island at all.
"Deaths linked to vaping nationwide," Fox 40, Sept. 6, 2019: Information about the screening on the Stockton Campus of the documentary "VAPE" was part of a larger story on the dangers of vaping and e-cigarettes. Alumnus Chris Schueler '78, the film's director, was interviewed for the segment. KCRA 3 mentioned the screening several times throughout the day. Schueler was also interviewed by KFBK for a podcast: '"VAPE' Documents an Epidemic in Youth E-Cigarette Use," KFBK, Sept. 6, 2019
"Turn Your Fall Chili Into A Medieval 'Perpetual Stew' And Eat It Until You Die," MELMagazine.com, Sept. 7, 2019: History's Ken Albala commented in this story about "perpetual stew," the likely myth of a medieval tradition of a never-ending pot of food. "Food in History" by Reay Tannahill is often cited as a source that perpetual stew existed. "I have my doubts about this," Albala told MELMagazine.com. "Tannahill doesn't offer any contemporary evidence, and it's not in any cookbook or record I've ever seen. I think people just assumed that since the fire was on, people would have left the stew bubbling and kept adding to it while it sat over the hot ashes."
"2019 Swimming World Men's Water Polo Previews: Golden Coast Conference," Swimmingworldmagazine.com, Sept. 4, 2019: A portion of this water polo season preview reads: "Though they may have been unceremoniously dumped as conference champs, Pacific (#5T) is far from done at the top of the GCC. A two-year, eight-match winning streak in conference play was snapped by LBS last season, but the core of Head Coach James Graham's highly successful squad remains intact." Student-athletes mentioned in the story included two-time GCC Player of the Year Luke Pavillard, Engin Ege Colak, Luis Araya, Andrea De Nardi, Eli Lule, Djordje Stanic, Jeremie Cote, Jon Barry, Joey Maclean and Lewis Gale.
"Marin 'Teacher of the Year' lauded at Ross School: Music teacher Erika Meeker named for 2020 award," Marin Independent Journal, Sept. 5, 2019: Erika Meeker, the 2020 Marin County Teacher of the Year, has a master's degree from the conservatory.
