University of the Pacific has recently updated signage concerning exposure to hazardous chemicals

University of the Pacific's Office of Risk Management has recently updated the required California Proposition 65 signs on applicable university buildings. Prop. 65 requires the State of California to maintain a list of chemicals that can cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm. It also requires businesses, including our university, to provide warnings to employees and the public when exposures to such chemicals can occur at a given location. 

Initially enacted as a ballot initiative in 1986, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (known as Prop. 65) was recently updated to include a revision to posting requirements.

Signage has been updated throughout the university on appropriate buildings to reflect these changes. The required wording has changed from:

"This facility contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm,"

to the revised wording:   

WARNING: Entering this area can expose you to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm, including [insert chemical name(s)], from [source(s) of exposure]. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
