Virtual Dental Museum Showcases Exhibits on Dental History

Exhibits highlighting artifacts of dental history are available to view on University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry’s virtual museum — dentalmuseum.pacific.edu. The digital exhibits are part of the ongoing Virtual Museum Project, which began in 2012 as a creative way to present the school's Ward Museum collection. Viewers can browse through a number of exhibits including:

  •  “Toothache and Trauma: A History of the Toothkey”
  • “Centuries of Solace and the Sainthood of Apollonia: The Patron Saint of Toothache Sufferers and Dentistry”
  • “Different Strokes for Different Folks: A History of the Toothbrush”
  • “Still Lives in Dentistry: The Artifacts”
  • “Painless Promises: Business Cards of the Victorian Dentist”
  • “Please Have a Seat: Evolution of the Dental Chair”
  • “There and Back Again: Our San Francisco Story”
  • “A Dynamic Decade: Speeding Up the Handpiece”

The A.W. Ward Museum of Dentistry was founded in 1974 in honor of one of the school's early graduates and a pioneer of surgical periodontics, Abraham Wesley Ward, P&S Class of 1902. Since its inception, the collection has grown from in-kind donations, made primarily by alums. Most of the artifacts date from the mid-1800s to mid-1900s. For the development of future displays, the Ward Museum gratefully accepts donations of objects such as dentures, instruments, toothbrushes and other small period pieces, and of school-related memorabilia, photographs and documents.

Students, researchers and dental professionals interested in studying the collections may contact Dr. Dorothy Dechant, museum curator, at 415.929.6627 or ddechant@pacific.edu
