A dedicated group of 30 dental students accompanied by seven faculty members and two staff members took time over the recent summer break to care underserved children half way across the globe.

For the second time in two years, the group traveled to Cebu in the Philippines to provide dental care and oral health information at the Canjulao Elementary School. Dental services included cleanings, fillings and extractions.

In addition to brightening the children's lives, the group participated in offsite excursions that included island hopping off the coast of Mactan, seeing whale sharks in Oslob and visiting nearby waterfalls. Cebu is a province in the country's Central Visayas region, comprising Cebu Island and more than 150 smaller surrounding islands and islets.

"I was honored to go back on this trip for the second year in a row," said Ellie Schwartz DDS '20, one of the student leaders who helped organize the outreach. "On this trip we were able to bring more faculty and students than last year which enabled us to provide more treatment than we have in the past. It is an honor to engage with such a wonderful community of people, and we loved putting smiles on all of their faces." 

The trip is just one of several international mission trips that Dugoni School volunteers have coordinated or are in the process of organizing. Volunteers are also raising funds for trips to Jamaica, Guatemala and Mexico.
