This two-year fellowship is designed for individuals interested in academia in advanced pharmacy practice and who desire to acquire extensive experience in ambulatory care practice and clinical research. The well-rounded training and experience gained through this program equips graduates to be successful in academic or ambulatory care practice. Fellows will also obtain formal training to be an independent researcher by joining multiple research projects.
Areas of experience
The rotation options include, but are not limited to:
- Medicare Part D/geriatric outreach
- Acute inpatient medicine
- Ambulatory care practice (including diabetes, heart failure, anticoagulation management and transitions of care)
- Education methodology and assessment
Clinical rotations will be offered in internal medicine and ambulatory care, mostly occurring at the county teaching institution San Joaquin General Hospital. Additional experience in diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia management will be acquired at the Community Medical Center in Stockton. The fellows’ participation in the ambulatory clinics spans the duration of the fellowship program and includes pharmacist-run and collaborative practice clinics. Through their longitudinal ambulatory care experience, the fellows will acquire sufficient experience to become certified as an Advanced Practice Pharmacist.
Through their public health rotation in the one-of-a-kind Medicare Part D Outreach Clinics at University of the Pacific’s Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy, the fellows have the opportunity to gain expertise in the Medicare benefit and serve as preceptors during health care outreach events hosted in the San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties. Specializing in this niche topic dovetails perfectly with serving the patient population at San Joaquin General Hospital.
Most importantly, fellows will obtain a wide spectrum of teaching experiences as a clinical assistant professor. Through this role, fellows will experience traditional didactic large classroom teaching, case-study leading and experiential precepting. The variety of teaching experiences acquired by the fellows will allow them to practice as faculty in didactic and experiential settings.
The fellows can leverage their involvements in both academic and clinical settings to join various research projects, working alongside university faculty and health care professionals. They will gain first-hand experience in the comprehensive process of conducting research, with the opportunity to publish novel findings at the completion of their projects.

Our fellows find success
Combining a graduate degree with experiential learning gives graduates competitive advantage when applying for pharmacist positions where advanced training is required. Approximately 50% of former fellows currently work in academia and about 50% work in clinical and industry settings.
Candidates must have a PharmD and either be licensed or eligible for licensure in California by July 1, 2025. They should also be eligible for hire by University of the Pacific.
Applications are currently being accepted for the 2025-2027 fellowship term, with a start date of July 1, 2025 and an end date of June 30, 2027. Review of the applications will begin immediately and continue until the two positions are filled.
